thankful

Published by jess at 12:59 am under jess, now blow me posting month

there are so many things i am thankful for that it’s hard to sit down and write an ordinary post. obviously, i’m thankful for my family. for my friends. for my job in this time of economic instability. i know that everyone knows someone out there who is suffering. i’m thankful that there is food in my fridge and a roof over my head.

now that i’ve gotten the usual froo-froo thanks out of the way, i’d like to reflect today on the really shallow things i’m thankful for, with brief explanations why. they are really in no particular order. their hierarchical value could change on any given day with the added circumstances.

1. breakfast cereal. oh kelloggs. oh general mills. oh malt-o-meal. thank you. not only do you make my life simple, but i’m sure that sometimes my dentist thanks you, too. seriously, what did moms do before breakfast cereal? did they have to rise at 4 am, run out to the oat field, cut a few stalks of grain, stop by the barn, tug on bessie’s nether regions for milk and then come inside to greet the kids for breakfast?? i love to cook, but nothing says breakfast at our house like cereal and milk. for this, i thank you chex. i thank you marshmallow mateys. and last, but certainly not least, thank you honey comb.

2. google. how did i live without you? i know i have actually used an encyclopedia a couple of times in my lifetime, but it seems so…dreamlike. i almost can’t believe it was real.

3. toilet paper. i often take you for granted. today is your day to feel appreciated. i love your two-ply softness. except the kind at salt lake city international airport. i can’t help that the toilet paper purchasers there are really cheap assholios who don’t appreciate the finer things in life, like a comfortable wipe while traveling.

4. san diego chargers, denver broncos, buffalo bills, miami dolphins and new orleans saints. if it wasn’t for you four um, five (total edit there…i guess i can’t count) teams specifically, i’d be almost perfect every single week in pick ‘em football. thanks for keeping my feet on the ground and not letting my head get too big. if you guys actually knew how to WIN, i might be able to win first place in my leagues. we don’t want any men to think that girls might be better at picking football games than they are, so thanks for not letting that happen. shitheads.

5. maverik. you have decent coffee (and you have REAL HALF n HALF. this is SOOO kosher!). decent pastries. your diet mountain dew is usually mixed just right. especially you, richmond maverik. i love all the employees in your store and love seeing you in the morning even though i’m not a morning person. time to start giving me free hashbrown stix for being such a bad ass patron. thanks in advance.

6. bravo tv. without your influence over the past several years, i’m pretty sure i’d be a total homophobe. thanks for not letting that happen.

7. webpages designed for mobile web users. oh how i heart thee. you make my life awesome. it’s ok to browse the web while i’m in the bathroom, right?

8. prop 8. i’d like to thank you, prop 8, for opening a major discussion across all walks of life in the united states. i don’t think you realized how big you’d really be, but man were you huge. except for that little thing called the presidential election … OH! and the summer olympics, you will easily be one of the biggest stories of 2008. i’d like to thank people on both sides of the issue for remaining calm and rational. and i’d like to severely chastise those who used hate speech or violence to get their point across. i’m a hater of haters. i really can’t wait to see what happens next with all of this…

9. fall 2008. thank you, october and november for being a real fall season for us here in northern utah. the days have been sunny. the nights have been cool. it’s been a lovely fall season and i want to be on the record noting it as such.

10. burt’s bees lip balm. my lips thank you every single day.

i could go on and on. but i think you get the point. besides the OBVIOUS things, what are some of the things you are most thankful for? novocaine? hand lotion? tampons? madagascar? your DVR? pre-made pie crust? ksl.com classifieds?

i wish you a day of thanks. a day of happiness. i wish you a very very happy thanksgiving.

Stumble it!

LOL! you are so freak’n clever!
I need to say a few Amen and hear hears. On
    Burts bees’.. that stuff rocks.
Google. I’d be a lost with out it too the toilet paper .( your ass deserves the best.) and of course the breakfast cereal.

Things I’m grateful for.. oh lets see. Diet mt dew. for keeping me sane thru the days and not giving me any calories so the guilt is gone. My tues, wed, thrus. shows that give me somehting to look forward to. My kitchen aid that makes me look cooler then I actually am. Ebay, Amazon that lets me “shop” with out shopping.

Of course I ‘m thankful for the serious stuff. Family, friends super funny bloggers. our job. and the ability to pay all our bills. and quickly falling gas prices!!

    Happy Thanksgiving Girl!

If I had to put these things in order (all after the usual family, friends, job, el gordo gato), it might go something like this…

    1. Beer- where, oh, where, would I be without the cool, yet bitter, taste of my local Marble IPA or Chama River Dr. Hop Good or Stone Ruination IPA or Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale? Surely I’d be on the slippery slope to normalcy and settling down and NO ONE wants to see that happen.
But, I am also thankful for porters when the season turns a bit nippy. Among my favs, Santa Fe Brewing State Pen Porter, Deschutes Black Butte Porter…

    2. Meat- you haunt my dreams. In fact last night I dreamed of eating a big, juicy, medium rare porterhouse steak. I even dreamed that I cut you up into really small pieces so I could savor every single bite. Or maybe it was because I wasn’t sure exactly why in the fuck I had ordered a steak and was pretty sure I wasn’t going to enjoy it. Either way meat, thanks for reminding me that there are people around the world that are vegetarian by necessity instead of choice.

    3. mornings- I am totally thankful for mornings. Especially the ones that start WITHOUT the alarm. You know, the ones where you wake up at your leisure (for Bridge it’s more like afternoon), stumble to the kitchen and start a nice cup/pot of coffee that you will actually be able to enjoy instead of just suck down because you needed the caffine 35 MINUTES AGO!!!!

I could go on but you get the picture… HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Oh, and paid holidays. I’m head over heels for paid holidays (especially since I found out that people close to me have lost that benefit. But not Bridge b/c she never had it. Take that Miss I-own-my-own-business!) and having enough accumulated PTO that I could just decide at the last minute to take today off as well. KEWL!

    Maverik Rocks!!!!! hehe….

    Way awesome blog

  4. Bridgeon 26 Nov 2008 at 11:28 am

    This post was amazing…

I would like to thank Al for reminding me that I wake up in the afternoon and not the morning. At least I would if I didn’t have to get kids to school.

I would like to thank the economy for sucking so I don’t have to work as much. Money is overrated right?

I would like to thank my daughter who just cried because I scheduled a play date for her and the friend can’t play until 4 hours from now. Her life sucks.

I would like to thank my son for NOT getting off of a computer game when I told him to last night so that he can be grounded from it today. I am so happy to hear “can I play yet” about a zillion times a day. So fun!

I really am thankful (and not sarcastic) for every single person I know. Have a Happy Thanksgving!

Well, the obvious thing I am thankful for is YOU. And your hilarious posts that make my days worth getting out of bed for. (Bridge and Al not excluded). I am very thankful for all my friends…what few I’ve made and managed to keep. You make living in Utah bearable. Thank you for that! My friends are my family. Our family is in California. Too far to drive. Too expensive to fly. I’m thankful for makeup, deodorant, toothpaste and perfume. How scary is the thought of living without these essentials?

Right now, this very moment, I am thankful for Glosette peanuts. Probably because that is what I’m eating for lunch.
Tonight when I get home from a crazy day at work and enter my crazy house of puppies, I will be thankful for gin.
    That’s pretty much it today.

Okay, okay….I can’t help myself. I must weigh in.
I hardly ever eat cereal, but I like Irish Steel Cut Oats with honey or black strap molasses. But in all sincerity, I’m with Al on the beer thing. Love a good ESB, a perfect pint of Guinness and a very good IPA. And I love a good steak when I can afford one.
    I take Google for granted.
    TP????? nothing to say, Jess….
AND…screw your Chargers….Patriots all the way!!!!
    5,6,& 7??? Kinda lost here.
Prop 8…I too had to weigh in on that and posted my thoughts on the matter.
9 & 10…..well, its the simple things that make life worth living. It really is. Good food, good conversation, good friends….all of your need and some of your wants is all that anyone really needs to be content..

Amen on the Burt’s Bees!! Did you know it’s 6 bucks at the gift shop at the IHC mega hospital in SLC? Just in case you wanted some random trivia. Now when I buy it for 3.99 at Fred Meyer Smiths I’ll think I’m getting a bargain!
