summer music
i was tagged by jessica for this. i went to high school with jessica (i call her jess, but to keep the confusion down, she’s jessica here. i’m jess. she’s jessica. thanks.) but i wasn’t friends with her back then. she is the same age as al, which means she graduated a year after bridge and i did. we “met” recently in the blogosphere via kvnu’s for the people blog and chat room (you can talk to us both there most weekdays between 4-5 p.m. MST) and we get along fabulously! we have similar political viewpoints - but she’s much smarter than i am. she was tagged for this by the BRC, who recently relocated from the good ole valley of cache to texas a & m, that OTHER aggie school, so that craig’s brain can explode. he, along with his wife, are two of the most intelligent, humble (not craig!) and giving people i’ve ever had the opportunity to meet.
but onto the point. i’m supposed to list seven songs that have shaped up Summer ‘08 for me. since i LOVE music, it might be hard to pick just 7 songs. try to have an open mind when you look at my list! i’m also going to provide youtube links so you can listen if you want… these are in no particular order, btw…
1. paper planes by MIA. a-holes at youtube disabled embedding, so here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6XySRLwOXk i fell in love with this song the first time i heard it - and you may have heard a snippet on tv, as it’s the music in the pineapple express trailer. i’m not a seth rogen fan, tho. (if you right click the link, you can open it in a new tab so you don’t have to use your back button to come back here…)
2. house of cards by radiohead. first off, i am kind of a radiohead hater. i’m sorry. i know how many of you out there adore radiohead, but most of their music makes me want to drink 2 bottles of cheap wine, get into the hottest bath i can stand and draw sharp razor blades down my wrists.
this radiohead song rules. and i also love “all i need” but i’m leaving it off this list. i only have room for seven songs.
3. give it 2 me by madonna. look, i’ve loved madonna since i was about 8 years old. i know, what a figure to look up to, right? her “like a virgin” album was the first tape i ever owned!! not only does this badass bitch still sell a bazillion records, she is looking hot as ever at 50. can you believe she is 50?
4. i kissed a girl by katy perry. i love the beat of this song…i don’t care what the lyrics say. they could say almost anything and i’d still like this song. however, i’ll never use cherry chapstick again. ever. paul and i heard this song 59 times on our road trip to montana, so i always think of that trip when i hear it, which is the biggest reason it’s on this list. this IS the summer ‘08 list.
5. see you again by miley cyrus. i pick this song because paul and i spent approximately 1.9 million dollars on july 4 to take our kids to see miley cyrus and blue man group at the stadium of fire. miley is pretty darn cool and she can definitely sing. plus, i can totally sing this song in the car with my kids and feel good about it. we rock out. and i don’t care who can see me. laugh it up if you want, but i’m down with miley cyrus.
6. handlebars by the flobots. lots of y’all probably hate this song, but i totally dig it. if you really listen to the lyrics…i think you’ll like it too. you’ll have to interpret the song the way YOU want to, but i think it’s saying you can do whatever you want to do…and you can stand up for what is right. all by riding your bike with no handlebars.
embedding is also disabled on this video, so again…a direct link for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK2A1ZqoWs
7. shut up and let me go by the ting tings. again - no embedding! idiot! i love a couple of things here - the lead singer is a chick, which is always cool. second, it’s got kind of a disco feel to it and a wicked beat. did i just really say wicked? plus it says “shut up” a lot and i really like that. uber cool, since i’m a mom n’ all. but whatever. here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r23cm7bL9E
and i know it’s only supposed to be seven songs, but here are seven SERIOUS runners-up.
1. ben folds - you don’t know me
2. disturbed - inside the fire
3. coldplay - viva la vida
4. one day as a lion - wild international (are you a zach de la rocha fan? rage against the machine? check out one day as a lion!!)
5. weezer - pork and beans
6. shiny toy guns - le disko
7. vampire weekend - a-punk (check this out if you like happy ska-type music)
now for seven people to tag. eff. i don’t even know seven people.
1. tom grover. it’s time for you to start your OWN blog again. YOU ARE TAGGED.
2. stacey
3. the over-thinker (she’s so damn cute i want to vomit. literally.)
4. channers
5. friday yet?
6. nancie
7. WHOEVER ELSE WANTS TO DO THIS LIST!!! please link back if you want to play - i want to check out your tunes!!
Stumble it!

Jess this is the address to my blog.
life-itiswhatyoumakeofit.blogspot.com
Why? When you click on my name does it send you to some random guys blog? I don’t get it. It was good to see you the other night at the carnival I miss you. Jeff has begun telling people on his line that I am one of his wives. Silly boy.
Eff. I’ll do it. Since I’m musically challenged it will take me a friggin’ week to find the names of the songs and artists. I usually only listen to real music in my car which isn’t often. And at work I’m currently forced to listen to Q92. This will be the first thing changed when we move to our new building and I no longer have to share an office. BTW-I saw a button the other day that totally made me think of you. It said something like “How about a nice hot cup of shut the fuck up?” I almost bought it for you. Maybe I still will. CU Next Tuesday!
annika - i thought you WERE one of his wives! lol - my bad. it was good to see you too! i miss you. and your blog link works here, but it went to some random blog from kathryn’s site…
nan - thanks for playing! your tunes ROCK. i love that “ayer” song - i forgot about it. i also love the metro station song. factoid: the lead singer of metro station is miley cyrus’ brother trace cyrus! FO REAL.
Were you drunk when you decided I was the smarter one? Thanks for the flattery, though. I’m glad you tagged Tom. It’s about freaking time that boy made a blog. I mean, it’s been a week and I’m dying!
I’ve never heard any of the songs you suggest… That’s what I get for being a public radio junkie…
I SO SUCK at names of songs. I would recommend you check out the new Alannis Morisette CD though. Some good beats. Some pathetic, makes you want to smack her for having no backbone after a break-up songs, but even they aren’t so bad.
Great list. I’m love me spom flowbots, ting tings, vampire weekend, viva la vida…
heh heh I typed ’spom’
DANG-O!* I am so damn behind in my blog-reading that I didn’t even realize you had tagged me for something! And you said I’m cute! I love you! (Here, I’ll hold your hair as you vomit from my cute-ness…..heh.)
*Absolutely no reference to Rachel Ray’s “Yum-O”….because I hate her.
It would be really hard for me to pick my top songs of the summer. I’m very weird with music - I listen to it over and over and over until I hate it. April/May was spent listening to Sheryl Crow’s Detours, the June/July to Madonna’s Hard Candy. I haven’t heard half the songs you mentioned, but I do like Shut up and Let Me Go and I Kissed a Girl. Other than that, I’ve been going back to the 90s old school style, listening to Alanis, Whitetown, the Wallflowers, etc. I really need to get with it. I’m too young to be 50.
