My PHOTO CONTEST entry

Published by Al under al, photo contest

I think this will be the only time I can enter… But I still can’t win (which I think is bullshit, people, bullshit). I have some awesome nature photos that were taken earlier this year but Bridge is a Nazi so I went out and took some new ones.

Desert Bird of Paradise_1
This is the Desert Bird of Paradise shrub. It is my FAVORITE desert plant of all time. When in full bloom, the stamen stick straight out. When they start to become flaccid, I know the end of summer is near (I encourage you to look at this at full size. I f’ing HEART this flower!)

Dead Dandilion
Another indication that summer is coming to a close… The little white fluff that is the end of a dandelion.

Rose Bud
This rose bud is outside my neighbors back door. Why not mine?

Anywho- Thanks Bridge for coming up with this idea. Keep the photos coming, people!

what’s in a name?

Published by jess under al, humor

So I was reading Jay’s blog (which I have been reading EVERY DAY since I told him I was IN for Fantasy Football, and then totally skipped out on because I’m a LAME-O and was in the field) and he did this thing where he typed in his name and then ‘needs’ afterwards into google.

So I thought I’d give it a try because my real name is SO rare, at least in it’s spelling, and I thought it’d be interesting. I knew there was at least one more of me out there, because I’ve had to google myself before (that sounds SOOOOO naughty) to add a poster to a resume (totally legit reason). But I didn’t know that some chick who is living in Japan was writing a story with ME as the main character.

Alright, it’s not ME (but she does seem feisty and a bit on edge, yet accepting and laid back) but still fascinating. I’m thinking of asking this chick where she came up with the name.

I’ve always wondered about my name. And I don’t necessarily mean my name per se, because a lot of girls share it, but the spelling is so freaking odd than 9.9 times out of 10, it’s mis-pronounced.

So the story goes thusly, the nice people at the obstetrician’s office told my parents that I had a little wiener (and would likely grow up to have an unusually large wiener! Kidding, threw that in because I thought it would get a laugh or two). My parents, being more prepared for #2 as they were for #1, came up with nice, great, boy names. And they trusted whole-heartedly in those educated doctor’s office employees (although I don’t know why, they also told my parents that my older sister was a boy. Big surprise!)

So no girls names hanging in the wings. Not one. They had mustered up all they could to name my sister and were fresh out. Luckily for me (I think), my mother was an avid reader. There was a character in one of her recently read books (read during my incubation) that had my name. So, when I was birthed, and those super nice people from the obstetrician’s office sprung the HAPPY NEWS! that a baby girl had been birthed (baby, sans unusually large wiener), my parents had nothing. nada

But they had to come up with something. The birth certificate couldn’t very well be left blank.
Dad: Matilda?
Mom: Uh, honey, she doesn’t look like a Matilda to me. Next name, please.

Dad: Samantha (I’ll just mention here that I really wanted this name when I was a youngster. Sam on that Tony Danza show- the name just totally slipped my mind- was freaking awesome!)
Mom: I don’t want her to have a boy’s nick name. Let’s try another one.

Dad: Jennifer?
Mom: There are WAY to many of those. I want my daughter to have an entirely unique name that people misspell, mis-pronounce and generally fuck up for the rest of her life.

Dad: Uh, ok.
Mom: So, babe, how about Aleeca? I just read this book where a woman by this name was a main character (WHAT BOOK, MOM? I’ve been asking this since I can remember. My absolutely gratifying answer? “I don’t remember. Nor do I remember what kind of person she was.” Gee, thanks, Mom. You’re a real help here). It’s unique and just crazy enough that I think I really love it.

That’s it, reader. That’s the story (with some slight fabrication) of how Al got her real name. And, in case you’re wondering… it’s pronounced “A-Lisa.” I know it’s not phonetic but how long do we wanna argue with our parents about the pronunciation of our names based on the spelling and how the rules of English dictate that it should be said? I, for one, gave up more moons ago than I can count. Enjoy the story. I think I shall go back and read about the adventures of one of the few who share my name…

The only think I know how to say in German is “beer.” I think I need to know more than that before I go there.

Published by Bridge under bridge

There has been a slight change in my trip to Europe. Instead of going to Belgium… we are going to Germany.

I don’t speak German.
Al doesn’t speak German.
A girl named Rachel who we are meeting in Amsterdam… doesn’t speak German.

We have a theme going on here.

I’ve been told by a few travelers that everyone in Europe speaks English. This is a lie. Do not believe them. For example… my family in France doesn’t speak English. A few of them think they can. My mom even told me that my family spoke English. Right before I went to spend and entire summer with them. Whatever they thought they were speaking, it wasn’t English. Luckily by the time I left France I spoke French, or at least I thought I did.

The other night I assigned Al to “learn” German. I figure I don’t want to be the only person contributing to the speaking a different language on our trip. She is totally up to the challenge. She has one and a half weeks.

/blinks

Yes, we leave in one and a half weeks. Think… in one and half weeks I will be in Amsterdam doing NOTHING ILLEGAL. P A R T Y !

Now I want to help Al out. I decided to come up with a list of phrases we need to learn before we head into German territory.

HERE IS THE LIST SO FAR:

I surrender! (Said with french accent for emphasis.)
Where is the bathroom?
Wait… I do not have a penis. Where is MY bathroom?
Yes my friend is a whore. That would cost 5 euros.
I need a lot more beer.
Adolph Hitler can kiss my (insert bad word here).
Lederhose are NOT hot.
Is my bra strap showing?
I am not a beer wench.
I REALLY am not a beer wench.
Fine, give me your money. I’ll pretend to be a beer wench and buy myself a beer as well you drunk $#%^!

So does anyone else have anything they would add to this list? The more the better!

farewell dog days

Published by jess under jess

ahhhh another summer has come and gone. i never thought i’d say this, and i realize i sound like my mother. hell, i may sound like your mother! oh the horror! sounding like your parents.

that’s a different post.

where was i? oh yeah - i was about to say that the older you get, the faster the time goes. i swear it was just new year’s eve last week. but september is right around the corner? where the hell have i been for the last eight months?

have i ever mentioned how much i love summer? i adore it. i adore the heat. i adore thunderstorms with big lightning. i adore snow cones and ice cream and actually having a reason to eat them. (hello? it’s HOT outside!!!)

this summer was my first summer as paul’s wife. i got a new car this summer! bud light with lime was introduced to us. this is our first summer in our house…with a huge yard to water. this has been my first summer with my sweet little doggy, stormy. i might be older, but there were still many firsts here this year.

life at home is slow in the summer. nice and lazy. there’s no homework to do, no school errands to run, no library books to search for frantically at 11:30 p.m., no dancing, no soccer, no NOTHING.

school started last week - with a bang. i baked 200 mini muffins for the PTA’s back to school night. the school had a bunch of kids register at the last minute, so they got enough kids to split one of the classes. unfortunately, this had a direct effect on me and my son, as we found out he had a different teacher after we had been standing in the wrong room for 3 minutes. jake started soccer practice and jenna has been registered for dance. she’s taking two classes a week this year, so that is FUN! for me. jake has his first soccer game on saturday and he scored THREE GOALS!!! i was soo proud of him. soccer was really rough last year and i think he might have scored once all year long. so three in one day is a HUGE deal.

it’s getting to be my favorite time of year - nice and hot during the day, but coooool at night. i can open the windows and breathe fresh cool air. it’s cold in the morning when i get up, but it feels so refreshing. and if you know me - you know ain’t NUTHIN’ refreshing about morning. don’t talk to me in the morning. don’t even look at me funny.

and while we’re saying goodbye, i’ve got to say goodbye to something that has been a damn good friend for the past two weeks: the beijing summer olympics. we laughed, we cried, we cheered, we drank beer together and i’ll miss you SUMMER OLYMPICS. but i’m glad you’re gone. my house is a mess, laundry isn’t done, and i’ve got a book or two that needs to be read.

farewell, summer 2008. you have been one of the best summers of my life. :)

***END EDIT***

Those of you that know me know I love photography. It is a passion of mine to say the least, and after that… no comment.

Well I want to do a photo contest, and I want all of you to do it with me as well. Please invite all of your friends. I want this to be an ongoing thing. THERE IS A PRIZE!!! SEE BELOW. I will also submit a photo, but I am NOT in the competition. Jess and Al can totally submit as well, but Jess cannot win since she is voting this week. I am still working on all the logistics of this, but next week I will have the official rules. I will also figure out who is judging. I am planning on having more than just me. This week Jess and I are the judges.

THIS WEEKS THEME: SOMETHING IN NATURE

PRIZE: $10 Gift Card to your place of choice. (note from jess: i have to be able to buy it online.)

SUBMIT: ALL ENTRIES SHOULD BE SUBMITTED BEFORE SATURDAY AUGUST 30TH AT MIDNIGHT (mountain daylight time). I’ll post my favorites for view on Monday. Jess and I will also select a winner.

RULES

1. Take a NEW photo. Do not submit something you have already taken. Yes I should be able to tell in the meta data. Yes I can check that. Unless noted otherwise I want NEW photos.

2. Take the photo yourself. If you don’t take the photo then you shouldn’t submit it. If you put your camera on a tripod and just have someone push the button then it is ok. If you have them hold the camera it is NOT ok.

3. Post your photo on your blog and mention the contest. Invite others to join and give them our URL. The more the better!

4. Put a link in our comments. This link should have the post’s URL and not just your blog’s URL. By commenting you are giving me permission to post your photo on my blog with your link. I might possibly even critique your photo. Bonus for you.

5. Cross your fingers and hope you are chosen to be the winner!
